Neurodiversity, Mental Illness, and Sex & Gender (Social Neuroscience of Diversity and Inclusion Series)

The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to the value of diversity by first looking at the benefits of diversity in nature. From there, participants will learn specific examples of diversity in nature including: neurodiversities (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities), mental illness, and sex & gender diversity. Participants will also explore the limits of “categorical thinking” and the value of capturing diversity with a continuum or spectrum approach. Participants will learn some of the benefits and cognitive skills associated with neurodiversity and mental health as a way of reframing “disorder”. This introduction will be framed in the theory of intersectionality.
