The gut-brain axis, as it is known, is the biological connection between the brain and the digestive system. Only in the past decade have neuroscientists really begun to unravel to important role that a healthy gut plays in a growing list of cognitive and neurological conditions, including mental illnesses (Depression, Bipolor Disorder), neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis), and developmental disabilities (e.g., Autism). Much of the research has lead to a deeper understanding of the microbiome, the good bacteria that populate the gut lining and help with a whole host of functions like digestion, detoxifcation, and immune function. It is now clearer than ever that what and how we eat has consequences for how we think, feel, and behave. In this way, a healthy gut can support a healthy minds and brains.
