Certificate Courses

We offer several certificate courses that allow students to invest in a topic of interest for an extended period of time (typically 6 months). Students are part of small classes (under 20 people) with at least once expert teacher. 

In the typical format, students meet monthly with their class and teacher(s) about a particular general topic. After being introduced to the topic by the teacher, each student chooses a subtopic to explore for the next month using a set of guiding questions determined by the teacher and the students. After the research period, all students return for the next class having researched and prepared a short summary of what they have discovered to share with their classmates. 

Over the course of 6 months, students are exposed to 6 different topics relevant to their certificate while also having the opportunity to learn topics of special interest to them and hear about topics of special interest to their classmates.

The certificate courses prepare students with a general overview of the field and stand alone as an excellent learning experience. The certificate courses also prepare students for continuing into the MicroDegree program of study, for those who want to continue to explore a topic of interest.

Life Coaching Certification

Our CAN Life Coaching Course uses neuroscience, positive psychology, and mindfulness and allows students to transfer theoretical knowledge into practical tools to help guide others through a personal development journey. The course was developed by Dr. Mandy Wintink and launched as our first course in 2010.

We offer this course in-house in Toronto and online for individual enrollment.

Psychological Neuroscience

The Psychological Neuroscience course is an introduction to general neuroscience and psychology topics of current relevance including drugs (i.e., Neuropsychopharmacology), mental disorders, neurological disorders, sex & gender, the effects of technology & social media on the brain, and multiple intelligences.

Social Neuroscience of Diversity & Inclusion

During this course, students will learn some fundamental principles of how the mind and brain work through the lens of psychology and neuroscience. For example, students learn the neuroscience basis of cognitive biases, discrimination, and prejudices. They will also learn about the nature of diversity, the theory of intersectionality, and stress and recovery associated with traumas. Ultimately, all of the learning prepares the students’ brains to think more inclusively, appreciate diversity, and serve as agents of social change.

Certificate courses serve as a pre-requisite for anyone who wants to complete a MicroDegree in the same area of study.

Format

The program is online unless otherwise stated and meets once monthly for about 3-4 hrs per class, for 6 classes.
